‘Talcot Challenge’ Suwon, ‘3G Draw’ Seoul in 101st Super Match…Hwang Eui-jo ‘K League Farewell’

After a two-week A-Match break, the K League is back. The reeling Suwon Samseong will play the 101st “supermatch” of its history against the top-ranked FC Seoul.

Suwon will face Seoul in the 19th round of the Hana OneQ K League 1 2023 at Suwon World Cup Stadium at 4:30 p.m. on April 24. Currently, Suwon is 12th and bottom of the table with nine points (2 wins, 3 draws, 13 losses), while Seoul is third with 29 points (8 wins, 5 draws, 5 losses).

The teams’ performances this season have been polar opposites. Suwon hired new head coach Kim Byung-soo last month in an attempt to rebound, but they still haven’t made it out of the bottom of the table. While some would argue that their form is improving, they have just one win, one draw, and five losses in seven games, most notably a 1-2 loss at home to local rival and struggling Suwon FC.

Seoul, on the other hand, has gotten off to a strong start and is in contention for second place. Of course, the gap to eighth-place Gwangju (25 points) is tight, but a win here could see them leapfrog Pohang (31 points) into second place. This is in contrast to Suwon, who are aiming to get out of last place.

However, this is a traditional rivalry derby, so don’t make any hasty predictions. Another factor could be how different Suwon is under the guidance of Kim Byung-soo after a two-week break. Seoul is also winless in its last three games (two draws and one loss), so the mood is not great.

The key will be how well Suwon’s shaky defense can contain Seoul’s national team attack. Suwon hasn’t won a game this season, conceding 30 goals in 18 matches. Only Suwon FC (36 goals) has conceded more goals than Suwon.

For now, Suwon has signed “veteran defender” Kim Joo-won to bolster its defense. “We signed Kim Joo-won, who has 11 years of experience in the K League, from Jeju United to strengthen our defense in the second half of the season,” Suwon said. He has also been coached by Kim Byung-soo during his time at Yeungnam University.

Conversely, Seoul’s offense has been in great form. First, Hwang Ui-jo scored a goal in two consecutive league games, and then he tasted a goal for the national team for the first time in a year. He opened the scoring in the second half of the match against El Salvador on Nov. 20 with a stunning turning shot. Hwang will be 메이저놀이터 extra motivated as he plans to return to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League after this match.

We can’t forget about Na Sang-ho. He leads the Seoul attack with eight goals and two assists in the league. Notably, Na Sang-ho also scored a brace in the Super Match in April, including the opening goal, which helped Seoul to a 3-1 victory.

Suwon, meanwhile, hasn’t beaten Seoul at home since a 3-1 win in September 2020. They have drawn one and lost two of their last three games. If Suwon can take all three points from this match, they will have a lot to gain, including their first home win of the season, restoring their pride, and gaining a foothold in the relegation zone.
